Croudsourcing: Help Me Weed The Garden
-
Inspired by a post in the facebook group and a few other conversations I've had I waned to bring up the idea of doing some crowdsource work on the spaffbase's dataset. This is the kind of stuff that would be hard to do for one person, but might be easier if the community did the work together (in parallel).
Specifically, I was asked "When did the band STOP including the 'chant' in Walls?" I honestly don't know, but it wouldn't be THAT hard to find out. We'd just have to grab the older versions and figure out when it wasn't played consistently. We could even add notes to the shows as we looked them over. IE: "With chant"/"Without chant". Or simply add "with chant" to the performances that had them. The specific implementation details don't matter. The point is that you guys can help mine that kind of data out of the recording history and we can record it in the spaffbase.
We've had discussion about when Red's intro was added to The Remedy. We may have an answer to that one, but there's another one we can prove, and then annotate those early performances (or just the first performance) with a note that signifies the introduction of that amazing melody.
I'm open to other interesting questions/answers/facts that we might be able to mine out of the data we've got. It's true that we can build software to do some of this stuff, like figuring out if/when the last AMF was played without Bee Jam, but there's other stuff that requires listening to recordings that would be a lot harder to identify.
So what do you guys think? We could even make a dedicated spot in the forum for these projects, or just a thread for each one. Then add to it as we go. No rush. If it took a year to complete one, so be it.

Though somewhat unrelated, one thing I just thought of.. when we have a known stream for a show, what about linking that to the show page as it's happening. So when a person opens Spaffnerds.com, the show that's happening at the moment(or near future) shows a link to the stream. I know this is covered in the forums, but just an idea for streamlining and user friendliness.

So you're really looking at a feature request, but this one is "code free". We could do what you describe.
Right now the streams section of the site is only visible to logged in users. I've always been a bit hesitant to promote the streams too much. I feel like they live in a gray area where we might, through too much publicity, find them being shut down.
With that said... IDK... I'm open to a conversation on this. Though let's start a new thread for that convo if we want to have it.

Maybe a forum page with a thread for each song (as it comes up) and keep all questions, answers, "must listen" version list, etc - that could keep it in an organized place while we gather the data together. Could just edit the main post so all the information we have for a song will stay at the top.
Tag the front of the thread [Original] or [Cover] stuff like that could help organization and being more searchable as well

Could make a dedicated section for it. Then could link to those pages from the song page in the spaffbase.
Not a bad idea. Let's get some upvotes!
