Outstanding Versions of Spafford Songs, Best Performances, Recommended Versions of Songs, etc...

This is the kind of thread I can get down with. Looks like I know what I'm doing this weekend.
I'd like to throw It's A Bunch 1/26/18 into the convo as honorable mention (I don't think it can beat out Crystal Bay)
-
@Lauer-Nation i think the most straightforward playing of Its A Bunch is at The Peach Festival on 8/12/17. Not necessary the best jam or nastiest, but for me its the definitive version.

Now that they laid sax down on the studio version of Ain’t That Wrong, 11/09/17 has a really nice saxophone performance as well. Similar grooves to the new studio version.

This was a great day overall! We got to hear them soundcheck for soundcheck (they played Living for the City). Then, we got to see soundcheck (jam and living for the city). Finally, at the show, those of us at soundcheck got to see them perform it at the show too! 3 Living in the Cities in one day after not seeing them perform it live prior.
Nick Gerlach on sax during ATW was fucking boss. I love this rendition.

Check out the video for this one. If I'm not mistaken Red actually misses the entry on the vocals. Brian and Red have a chuckle over it and Brian covers with a super Wa'd out lick. It's one of those moments where a "mistake" ends up producing something amazing. You've got to lean into the skid...
-
Two recommendations today.
- Soil 2018/04/20, gets very dark dirty funk right off the bat
- LTLO 2018/03/16, almost sounds like Cam's playing twice as many notes as usual, Brian shredding the whole time, the pre vocal breakdown jam and the post are both non stop peaking
-
@bee I'm on it. Spinning now

Honestly just stumbled on this show, 2013 is some of the best spafford IMO, but holy spafflords this taco stand

Land Down Under is some of the sickest shit I've heard in a minute.

Lonely from: 1/19/18, 3/3/18, and 3/11/18 all deserve a listen. 1/19 is all moss and blissy, 3/3 is cam on edrum -> roaring peak, 3/11 has most energy, can feel the heat pouring out
really depends on what kind of jam you are looking for. 1/19 and 3/11 deserve to be on there, 3/3 honorable mention

I was pretty (re: very) shit faced when I initially posted this. However on a completely sober re-listen it still stands as true.
The middle section is just straight up oozing dirty electro-funk therapy.

Backdoor Funk (Culture Jam version) https://spaffnerds.com/shows/2018-01-31
-
@Cody The way they slip into BDF from that Culture jam is so smooth. You can hear them patiently tease their way into it, especially hearing listening to Jordan's basslines as they go into the transition

I also listened to the 2017 ones (listed above, along with 4/6/17) after listening to all of the 2018 versions. 2017 is more laid back, 2018 more in your face. 2018 is in my wheelhouse so I'd say those are better but others may like their jams more subdued and go with when they first started jamming the song.

I've updated this as far as I can tell. If I've missed anything, check the top post again to make sure the "rules" were followed. This gets a little hard to keep up with at times, so those "rules" make it a little easier.
-
@GeorgeBailey I'm just glad that you started this thread instead of me XD

5/5/18 Todd's Tots weighs in at a cool 15 minutes on the nugs recording. Definitely worth a listen and I'm not positive they've jammed it quite like this before (or ever?). If they start ripping this song proper and blow this rendition away then this version would at least be the shift or signal for the song's ascent to the stratosphere...
