Teases. Teases? Teases!

Starting at about 10:30, there's a weekapaug groove jam between nick red and Jordan.

IW@TS and remember this sequence. I'll listen it over tomorrow. Thanks @myanruth

My favorite is probably Red playing a Dancing In The Dark tease (it's already noted) in 5/7/16. It was a pretty small crowd, and @Night-Train was making his usual random requests to the band before the show. He asked for Springsteen and was shot down by Red right away. He plays it at around 9 minutes into Memphis, and you can hear our guy in the background going crazy.
The recording is kind of garbage... my bad.

@Frito-Pie Red and I had an uncomfortable discussion about his dislike for Springsteen. He said he couldn't trust anybody that loved NJ that much.
As an expatriate NJ'er... I can kind of understand.

We need more people to weigh in. I feel like they are playing "with" weekapaug but not playing it. I don't want to be the authority, the community ultimately decides. If more people want it called a weekapaug tease or a weekapaug jam then it'll be added.

@RadiantDarkness I'd vote no on the Weekapaug teases. I've seen that mentioned for different jams as well and don't think it is an intentional tease. That's not to say they don't take inspiration from the song (or Phish in general) in their jamming, specifically ETS. I think if they ever cover Phish again it will be blatant, like the NYE 15-16 run.
With that said, I remember being there thinking it really sounded like Weekapaug.
Edit: Just listened again and yea it really really sounds like Paug, especially when Red comes in. I don't know you guys make a call. I feel like we could probably pick out a lot of Phish "teases" in many of their shows.
-
@RadiantDarkness I agree that it's definitely debatable, but my argument is that prior to nick and Jordan getting the section started, Red is playing something completely different, but stops playing once he hears what they are doing. Jordan's part is the most weekapaug-esque, but nick matches it for the most part, and red adds the right chords a few times but holds back mostly. Brian doesn't play at all in this section besides signalling to go back into ets.
It should be up to the community though, but I do think it would be beneficial if we had a section that defined tease, quote, etc to help with these discussions
-
@RadiantDarkness Everyone BUT Brian are absolutely playing Weekapaug. If he had hit the Weekapaug sequence when he came in, its 100%. But without him doing so, its everyone BUT Brian. Doth this make a tease? I think so. Think about Phish teases. Sometimes its just one of them playing a riff of another song for a couple measure to receive "tease" status.
-
@RadiantDarkness Then again, if we really want to debate teases and correct setlist notations, how about the Tweezer -> Caspian -> Tweezer (Jam?) from Magnaball? Seriously, that shit goes back into Tweezer or atleast a Tweezer Jam. I'm shocked at anyone that thinks Tweezer -> Caspian is correct on this one. Ok. Rant over.
-
@BushCow I was with @RadiantDarkness during that jam. However you slice it we were both left mopping up our minds.
-
Another probably debatable tease is from the 2015-03-11 Backdoor Funk. From 10:15 to 14:40 is a very Slave like jam that I think deserves to be denoted on the setlist

2-25-12 has the slave to the traffic light jam section in the middle of remedy. No denying it. What you referenced, I honestly don't hear it. I wish I did. Slave is my favorite Phish song, so if it's there, I'd feel less of a man and phan.
The weekapaug one from 4-1-16 can be argued either way, but I think we are erring on the side of caution with labeling Phish teases. They need to be absolutely perfect. But like I said, if more people chime in and we get a larger sample size that are all screaming at us to fix the setlist, then by all means, we'll do it!
-
That's a Weekapaug jam in the 4/1/16 ETS, no doubt.
-
@RadiantDarkness wow I just realized that I meant Reba not Slave, for some reason Slave was on my mind when I was typing that. But yeah, to me that segment sounds like the end of your typical Reba jam. That definitely does not sound like Slave haha.
-
@RadiantDarkness I've got an example of a clear as day, legit, Phish tease. Check out Funkadelic from 10/27/12 @ the Lizard Lounge. At about 4:10 in the track there's an undeniable First Tube tease.

It definitely "sounds" like it. I don't think we will be adding something like that to the setlist on here though. Always room for discussion, of course.

Added. Doesn't really need discussion

I mean I would say it would take a pretty conscious decision by the band to play a jam that similar to the standard Reba peak. You could probably take the section from 11:50 to 14:06 and play it for anyone who likes phish and they would assume it was a band covering Reba. Not sure if you would call that a tease or jam or what, but I definitely don't think it was coincidental that the jam ended up sounding like that. Just my opinion of course and hopefully some more people will weigh in.

Brian definitely hones in on some Trey tone and hits a Reba-ish peak. I'm just not sure we want to start labeling all their jams Phish. I asked @Andrew-Hilston to weigh in as Reba is his favorite song.
-
Yeah that's understandable, you definitely have to draw the line somewhere. To me at least, Brian and red especially give it the reba sound, but I might just be hearing things haha.
