Shows for a new enthusiast?

The Ithaca show from this tour is one of favs - the Parody > Its a Bunch > Parody is soo tight and really has a Dead type feel to it
-
@BBlank20 that's my jam of the year
-
@damian I've listened to it 3 or 4 times the past couple of days and can't get enough. The only thing that stinks is its impeding me from listening to other Spafford jams but I'll get to them eventually
-
@BBlank20 That's okay. In computer science there we have 2 types of tree traversals, depth first or breadth first. Either you go deep into one branch of the tree and discover what's there, or you go across all the nodes at the same level.
Point is, there's nothing wrong with looking deeply at one thing. Study it. Love it. Master it. You'll find the rest when you're ready.

@damian @BBlank20 "from one thing, know ten thousand things." Miyamoto Musashi, Japan's most heralded Samurai. Same guy also said "it is difficult to understand the universe if you only study one planet." Either way, dude was very proficient at "killing it." https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Book_of_Five_Rings

"This is the Madhu-Vidyā in quintessence – the contemplation of all things by the contemplation of anything."'
Don't ask why, as I don't know, but my first foray into The Grateful Dead was listening to only Dark Star. I listened to the first 50 or 60 of them before listening to any of their other tracks.
-
@RadiantDarkness that couldn't be more you.
-
@RadiantDarkness I was that way with Tweezer as I didn't get into Phish until '98 so I had all of the momentous 94-98 versions to explore. What would you guys say is Spafford's "tweezer"
-
I’m geeking out a bit over the fact that I have a new band to geek out over. These guys have really grabbed me attention
-
seriously, sign up for the 30 day trial for the nugs app. the new recordings are coming fast and furious.
-
@BBlank20 not sure that they have a 'Tweezer' yet...but I'm all in and know that they have songs that different people get excited over on that level...just not sure that there is that one 'holly shit' tune that unifies all in attendance and gets everyone all at once like that.
-
@BBlank20 I'd have to say that the song that I continuously see people go "Holy Shit" over is All In. But it isn't Tweezer. Tweezer is a massive type 2 jam vehicle. ETS is big too, especially with Alternate Ending thrown in (regardless of whether it's before or after ;P). You might also look towards Weasel for exploration as well.
The truth is that, if you're looking for Phish, go listen to Phish. Spafford definitely spent time doing Phish covers and when they did you could really hear them explore that type 2 space and sound pretty Phishy at times. But I believe they've made a conscious decision to define their own sound, as much as that can be done in the "jam" space. I know you aren't asking them to be Phish, and I also know that one can't help but measure jam bands against the MOAJB.
-
@BBlank20 yea not sure which song would qualify as their Tweezer. However, a while back I was thinking that LTLO was in a way their Dark Star. Bear with me. There are so many different jams that song sparks. I particularly love it when they do the two jam versions. But the thing I dig is you never know what's going to happen. It could be a guitar driven rock show or a slick EDM trance jam or a teary eyed euphoric uplifting thing. I'm really just noob though so what do I know.
-
@BBlank20
Weasel seems like their tweezer to me -
@BBlank20
It has a solid recognizable riff to start, and from my limited experience, is proving to be a significant type II jam vehicle. But one of my favorite things about Spafford is they can channel whatever band they want to fit their moment, but they always keep the sound distinctively theirs. Phish comparisons are inevitable, and not unhealthy, but I for one am falling so hard for Spafford because they blend so much of my favorite music seamlessly. They’re only going to get better too, it’s exciting! -
@SpaffPrise beautifully said
-
Great points by all. I certainly wasn't trying to compare them to Phish - just wondering which song you all felt was that huge jam vehicle that everyone gets pumped for because the throw down is about to happen. ETS seemed the onbvious answer for me but LTLO and All In are also very interesting choices.
Oddly enough after inundating myself with Spaff past few weeks of tour I went to listen to Phish today and found myself just going back to the 9-29 Philly show.
-
@BBlank20 wow that Galisteo Way gets to such an amazing spot in that jam! That show really is a great one front to back (whats your next goto show other than philly?). I got to peep the setlist during the show, Sweet was not on it and I love that song, so that def felt like a gift. Between that and Mama, that one had great covers. One thing I absolutely love about these guys is they cover songs I would never expect, and they freaking kill em too.
We should take votes for best cover of the tour so far? Mine may have to be Mad World from state college with sweet electronic jams, just wish it were 15min
-
@PhillySpaffnerd my favorite show from the tour so far is Ithaca but though I haven't listened back more than once I webcasted the BK Bowl show and really loved that 1st set. REALLY looking forward to diggin into that All my Friends (over 50 minutes according to Twitter postings)
-
@BBlank20 the first set of BK Bowl is beautiful - the LTLO set closer was an audible from Jordan BTW- and what a good call that was! Second set is quite incredible too. And the encore, I can't forget the encore! I know I'm biased from this being the only full show of Fall Tour that I soaked-in in person -- but it really is quite good and I think it has been somewhat overlooked in all the Fall Tour chatter. It was a short show but the jams really get into the zone and find great grooves within their limited time frames . Highlights are too many to name here... check out my (ahem, ahem, humblebrag) review of the show here https://forum.spaffnerds.com/topic/199/review-2017-09-30-brooklyn-bowl-brooklyn-n
