Linking to Shows in the Spaffbase instead of Archive (or youtube or any external source)
-
I just wanted to post this because I've seen people writing amazing posts and linking to the archive. It's not one person, it's a bunch. Whereas there's nothing inherently wrong or bad about this it is a bit counter to one of our goals on the forum and that is deep linking to the spaffbase.
Some reasoning:
The idea behind this is multi faceted.- We can keep users using the spaffbase. They can easily find other shows and find their way back to the forums. If they leave and go to the archive, they could be gone for good. Let's engage our people here
- External links can come and go. If you link directly to a show that's outside of the spaffbase and it goes away, then we'll have dead links that won't help people. If we link to the base we know that there is content there and we can update links as necessary. Consider the IAMAVL studio session. There was a good link, now there isn't. When it's back it will be back in the base and everybody who linked to the base will still be pointed at the 'right place'
- There may be more than just an Archive recording. There may also be youtube or nugs, or some other source. If you link to the showpage in the spaffbase people will get to choose how to consume whatever media exists instead of the AUD that you love. Maybe they have nugs and you don't. Or you have nugs and they don't. The spaffbase doesn't care. It lists them all and is (hopefully) a great resource for that.
- New features. There are things I can't talk about but there will be new reasons to use the spaffbase. If we drive people there they'll get more than just a show to listen to. I mean, even now they get lyrics and song history and other performances.
Here's a "howto" post about linking to the spaffbase for reference.

One of the new features is clowns, isn't it?
