    • RE: I'm Killing It! Sticker Raffle #1: First Spafford Show

Whats up Spaffnerds! Thanks to this website, I now know the date of my first Spafford show. It was 5-19-12 at the old Quixote's in Denver. Back in those days I was constantly going to shows looking for good new jam bands. Little did I know, the show I was about to see would become my favorite band.

When I saw this band called Spafford on the Quixote's website, I decided to google them and came upon a video of the band covering Men at Work's -Land Down Under. The video was from September 2011, I think. It's still up and still hilarious to watch the people dancing in that video. I'd never heard of anyone covering this song before and Spafford completely jammed the shit out of it. From that moment, I was hooked and had to see the show.

I remember getting to the show a little early to play ping pong. After crushing my friend, we decided to sit down next to the stage. We ended up talking to this guy sitting next to the stage for about 10 minutes. His name was Nick and he played drums for Spafford. Nick was a super cool and gave me a great first impression of what these guys were like.

I don't remember much of the show, so I'm really hoping a setlist pops up someday, but there were a lot of Phish covers in the second set. I do remember talking to Brian at set break and trying to convince him to move the band to Denver for more exposure. He respectfully declined, and I will always admire them for staying close to home, even if it meant spending more time breaking out.

I continued to be amazed at how much this band and fan base has grown over the last 5 years. It was rough seeing these guys play Denver in front of 10 people sometimes, but to hear they are playing the Ogden (1600 people), I couldn't be happier for this band, the fans and the future of improv music.

    • RE: Let's talk Broken Wing

This was a perfect opener for Red Rocks and the highlight of this show for me! I know many people will say the postman>weasel was the best moment, but I feel this song was spot on for that moment and venue. Even though I couldn’t attend the show, I can close my eyes during Broken Wing and be transported between those rocks!
Great call on this amazing song @RadiantDarkness

    • RE: Listen to Organ Freeman

@damian Just figured out how to link a couple days ago, lol. They’re not opening for Spaff on tour, but they are opening at RRX. So, that’s kind of a gray area I guess.

I thought about mentioning a couple songs that I like from them, but I also enjoy listening to a band without previous knowledge.

I think section dedicated to non Spafford music would be great. It’s nice to listen to other bands that are “better” than Spafford or new, come back refreshed, and reaffirm that Spafford’s fucking awesome!
Thanks for the advice Damian, love this place!

    • RE: Abaculus

      I'm guessing it's a studio album.
Think it'll be something like a cabin/pizza/e n e jam in studio. Who knows, they're creativity is off the charts!

ALL of them! That song is locked in my top 5 Spafford tunes. Ogden theatre if I must pick, mainly because I was there.

    • RE: DREAM JAM...

Back when I first discovered the band about 6 years ago, I listened to the 3-16-12 show well over 100 times because it was the best recording at the time. It follows legend in this show and others, so I always thought dream jam was a continuation of legend kinda like America and America “The Reprise”.

Sold out the Ogden theatre (1600) on a Thursday last fall. I’m looking for a Fillmore (3700) date this fall. These are in Denver though.

I'm going to everything in CO. Used up my unclaimed vacation time for Wind Rider. This tour would be so much fun to follow. Jealous of you guys hitting multiple states.

    • Listen to Organ Freeman

First caught these guys at Canyon Jam and was very impressed. They remind me of faster version of Soulive. Their new album is awesome and they are playing before Spafford at Red Rocks.

    • RE: Fall tour show you're most excited for?

I'm going to cheat and say the Canyon Jam at Mishawaka Amphitheatre. This place is incredible and I've been wanting Spafford to play there for years! Last time I was there was 2010 for Lotus and it was amazing. I haven't been in so long because there hasn't been a band worth the trouble of getting and staying there. The road to The Mish is very dangerous, I'd highly recommend the shuttle or other accommodations close to the venue. Camping is sparse, I'm thinking about going up early to claim a spot. It will be first come, first serve on all campsites that time of year.
This spot, to me, is better than any other venue in the country. It is the epitome of a Colorado outdoor concert; scenic, intimate and everybody getting crazy. Seeing my favorite band at my favorite venue is going to be very special. If your a Spaffnerd, do yourself a favor and come to this show/festival.

    • RE: What would you want to hear Spafford cover?

      @myanruth
CCR- I heard it through the grapevine.
Would like to hear Brian's take on this solo.

Going to a Herbie Hancock tribute this weekend, so let's hear a Rockit also. Gotta show Red some love. Jordan on the 1s and 2s!

But like you said, they're selection and execution of covers is second to none. Anything they cover sounds great.
