    • Review: 2017-09-27 - Charlottesville, VA & 2017-09-28 - Baltimore, MD

      9/27/2017 @ Charlottesville, VA

2017 has been a year full of changes for Spafford. The band started off with their first ever tour of the east coast and went through a lineup change soon after. Cameron Laforest took over on drums for long time member Nick Tkachyk and many fans, including myself, were worried about the ramifications of switching drummers at this point in the band’s development.

Cameron has truly made the position his own, and Wednesday night in Charlottesville was a great showcase of this.

The last time I had seen Spafford was at the Phish after show in August, which was also my first time seeing the band with Cameron behind the drums. Although the two shows were less than two months apart there was an obvious difference between the two performances. Even though the BB King’s show was very good, you could tell the band was still working on becoming comfortable with their new member and figuring out how he would affect their sound. It seems by now they have reached a comfort level that allows them to make some truly great music.

Wednesday’s show started off with the newest Spafford song Steak Sauce, and by the time they had transitioned into ETS, it seemed clear to me that this show and the rest of fall tour were going to be great.

Cameron is excellent at pushing the tempo in songs and is, in general, an aggressive drummer.
The Lonely from the second set is a great example of this. Brian seemed visibly amused at how quickly they were playing it, but the increased tempo seemed to suit them well and the following jam built off it beautifully.

      0_1506922628230_22193171_10155773844619294_110535217_n.png

Talking to people before the show, it seemed like most them were seeing Spafford for the first time, but were somewhat familiar with their music and very excited for the show. The Southern was noticeably fuller than the last time they played there, and the crowd was definitely more involved with the show. There were plenty of song requests called out, particularly Salamander Song, and by the end of the first set it was apparent they had matched or exceeded the expectations of most of the people in attendance, including my own.

Although I had seen them a few times before Wednesday night, something seems different about their playing compared to last tour, and besides having a new drummer, they seem more relaxed and in their comfort zone this time around. By bringing on some additional crew members for this tour, they have lessened their own responsibilities and can focus more on the music. Wednesday night saw very patient and consistent playing across the two sets, with my personal highlights being the Steak Sauce > ETS opener and the Lonely > Parody segment from the second set. After leaving The Southern a little past midnight, I walked to my car excited for the next night in Baltimore, and very optimistic for the future of this band.

      9/28/2017 @ Baltimore, MD

The next night in Baltimore featured music just as good if not better as the band made their way north. Before the show started there was an obvious buzz in the air of the sold out 8x10 over what was about to take place, and the band was greeted eagerly as they took the cramped stage.

      0_1506922615359_22184721_10155773839639294_667739762_n.png

They once again opened with an instrumental, this time choosing the relatively new It’s a Bunch. The very solid first set featured the same tight and aggressive playing from the night before, with the highlight being the high energy Minds Unchained jam that transitioned perfectly into the ending of Ain’t That Wrong, which finished the version from the night before.

      0_1506922660252_22215136_10155773839399294_684050219_n.png

The band maintained their momentum into the second set, with a great Leave the Light On to start the second half of the show, before playing multiple fan favorites including a massive Virtual Bean Dip > The Reprise to the end the set.

A Beautiful Day encore is always a great way to the end the show, and this time was no exception.

I would not be surprised if this was the last time they played the 8x10, which is disappointing as it’s a great venue to see a show, but they have clearly established a fan base in Baltimore, and they may need a bigger venue the next time they come to town.

      0_1506922677584_22236316_10155773838804294_1059503281_n.png
Both shows offered tight composed sections and patient, exploratory improv, and anyone who was at the shows or has listened to them online has hopefully realized that Spafford has not wasted anytime warming up, and have hit the ground running at full speed.

If you have not seen them this tour or at all, I highly suggest doing so if you can, as they probably won’t be playing in rooms this small for too much longer.

Special thanks to @ronskiiiii for sharing his photos for this review!

    • Spafford Summer Six Pack

Welcome to the Spafford Summer Six Pack. If you're not exactly sure what this is or why you're here, basically we found six
shows from the last six years that are either relatively unknown compared to shows from the same time frame, or do a good job
of highlighting the band's sound at the time. Or both. Over the next few weeks you are encouraged to listen to these six shows
and tell us what you think about them in this thread. Hopefully you will be able to find a new favorite show or song, and I look
forward to hearing what you have to say. The list of shows is as follows:

      2012-10-05 - Prescott College

All of these shows have high quality recordings, which are available on their respective archive.org pages, found on their show pages linked above.

      ** From @damian
As a bonus we're adding one extra to the 6 pack, the 2017-08-05 BB King's show which might be the band's ultimate 'coming out' party. Nothing says "We're here to stay!" like a sold out, Baker's Dozen post Phish show.

So far in 2017 they have debuted the following songs:
      It’s a bunch
      Mind’s unchained
      My road (my road)
      Simon & lily
      Steak sauce

I wonder how many more new ones they haven’t played yet?

@Randy-Dallas Top 3 for me are

      1. My Road (My Road)
      2. Mind's Unchained
      3. It's A Bunch

The Mind's Unchained from the fall Baltimore show is one of my favorite jams I saw last year and doesn't get enough attention, imo.

What is your favorite print, Spafford or otherwise, than you have produced, and what is your favorite Spafford print by someone else?

      Who is your favorite artist?

How has your process changed since you first began printing?

If you could have one current artist do a Spafford print, who would you want it to be?

    • Review: 2017-10-11 - State Theater, State College, PA

Setlist, Recordings, and Attendance for: 2017-10-11 - State Theater, State College, PA

Wednesday, October 11th, marked the first time Spafford played the State Theatre, a former movie theatre located in State College, PA, home of Penn State. This was my 9th and final show of the year and I was eagerly looking forward to it as I made my way up the scenic US-22, which has some really great views of the Susquehanna River this time of year.

And you get to see this, because why not put a replica of the Statue of Liberty in the middle of the Susquehanna river:
      alt text

After checking into my hotel room, I made my way over to the venue, which is located as close to the Penn State campus as possible while still being off-campus. This was my first time at the venue and I spent some time looking around before I went into the show. From the popcorn machine at the concession stand to the cinema-esque ticket checkers, the State Theatre had a very cool, old-timey feel to it, and I was very excited to see my first Spafford show that wasn’t in a bar or club.

      alt text

I made my way into the theatre and walked into the second half of Hayley Jane and the Primates set. I had never seen them before and had only listened to a little bit of their music before the show, but I was definitely impressed by their performance. After their set, I made my way up to the stage and talked to some of the other people patiently, but eagerly, waiting for the concert to begin. There seemed to be an even mix of first timers and people who had seen the band at least once before. I also encountered multiple people who had seen more than one show on this tour alone.

The band came onto the stage at 9:30 and opened up with what was in my opinion the best segment of the night, a 27 minute It’s A Bunch > Backdoor Funk, which contained some very patient and smooth jamming. Less than halfway through It’s A Bunch, Jordan began to experience technical difficulties which seemed to be related to one his cables and he was forced to play plugged directly into his amp until Backdoor Funk was finished. If the malfunction affected his playing it seemed to do it positively as he was probably the MVP of the jam even without any of his effects.

After replacing what seemed to be the problem cable, the band went into what is probably my favorite ballad of theirs, Diana. This was only the 20th time the song had been played. After wrapping up a standard but solid version of it, Jordan’s pedalboard was removed from the stage entirely as he had experienced more issues during Diana and played the rest of the first set effect-less. Virtual Bean Dip was up next, and was the other jam highlight of the night. They finished up the set with a short, but high-energy rendition of The Remedy that sent us into set break very happy and curious what they had in store for the second set.

Jordan without his pedals and Brian without Raven
      alt text

The second set opener, You Don’t Know How It Feels, was a welcome surprise to me as I had assumed most of the songs played during the 2017-10-03 encore in honor of Tom Petty’s passing would be one-offs, but two of the three have made a second appearance and hopefully will remain in the band’s rotation. The band then launched into a good but standard version of Todd’s Tots and Slip and Squander before ending the set with Mad World and Electric Taco Stand. Mad World is one of my favorite Spafford covers because it’s a great example of how they completely transform a song into their own. Unless you already knew the Spafford version, you would have no idea what they were about to play until the lyrics started. Played less than 20 times total since its debut in 2013, Mad World has fortunately made its way back into somewhat steady rotation after being only played twice in 2016. This high-energy version was a good warm-up for the set closer and highlight of the second half of the show: Electric Taco Stand.

I have been fortunate to hear four different versions of ETS, which is awesome since it's one of my favorite songs and the one I usually play when first introducing people to the band. This particular version continued the musical theme introduced during Mad World with a jam that has a very discho-ish/jamtronica sound. Although only clocking in at 11 minutes the band covers a relatively large amount of territory in that time span, with some of my favorite playing of the night from Cam starting around 6:00 minutes or so. The band ended their performance with Plans, one of their more unique songs that always leaves everyone smiling. Although it wasn’t the additional set that was chanted for after ETS, it was a great way to end the show and set us out to the mild October night.

Even though the show was short compared to most of the other ones I had seen them play, it still contained everything that I want at a show and that made me a fan of the band in the first place. 2017 has been one of the most, if not the most important year in the band’s existence and the way they grown both musically and in popularity bodes very well for their future. I personally can’t wait to see how they finish up the year and to see what they have in store 2018.

    • RE: I'm Killing It! Sticker Raffle #1: First Spafford Show

My first Spafford show was this past January at Milkboy in Philly. I had been listening to the band since the beginning of last year, but living in Maryland and being unable to attend the post-Phish shows for New Years, this was my first chance to actually see them live. Looking back, I can still remember how excited I was seeing the initial show announcement, and realizing that the wait was finally over. After making my way up 95 to a soundtrack of the Pizza & Cabin jams in what seemed like no time at all, I arrived in Philadelphia and made my way to the show. As I made my way up the narrow staircase, I remember thinking how cool it was going to be to see a band I liked this much in a venue this small. Once I picked up both the tour and show poster, I grabbed a beer and waited for Spafford to hit the stage. Although I had been waiting for this concert for almost a year at this point, and had listened to the band extensively, I still had almost no idea what to expect, and was probably a little bit nervous that they would not be able to live up to my lofty expectations. Fortunately, the first 30 minutes of the show consisted of an incredible VBD>LTLO, which certainly buried any doubts myself and the rest of the audience could have possessed. The rest of the night was a blur, and I am pretty sure the majority of my thoughts were made up of a combination of "Wow this band is awesome" and "Holy shit this place is way too crowded". As I was walking out, I got to talk to Brian for a minute, who was as humble as could be, even though he had just melted the faces of everyone in the venue, and I was able to express my gratitude for the performance I had just seen and my excitement for future shows. Soaking in the previous night the next day on the drive home, I had the realization that I would need to see this band as much as I possibly could in the future, and since then I have been fortunate enough to see them three more times (Baltimore, Charlottesville & Brooklyn) and will be seeing them for the fifth come August 5th. Although I have enjoyed seeing the band in bars and smaller clubs, I'm looking forward to seeing them grow in the near future and selling out larger and larger venues.

These two threads are a pretty good place to start. They contain a bunch of shows spanning the band's career, and you should be able to get a sense of how their sound has evolved over the years. Then I would listen to some shows from the current tour, 2017-09-29 and 2017-10-08 are both great shows with AUD recordings available. They also most of their recent shows up on nugs if you have a subscription or want to buy a copy of the SBD.

@603Brett thats hard to say. Bands usually go from playing there to playing at either Rams Head or Soundstage. Soundstage holds around 1000 and Rams Head is 1500 or so. If they did a co-headline with someone I could see them playing Rams Head otherwise Soundstage makes alot more sense, but even then I'm not sure they have the draw in Baltimore to fill it up. I love the 8x10 though so I really wouldn't mind another show there

    • Fall tour show you're most excited for?

For me it would have to be the October 11th show at the State Theatre in State College, PA. The venue is an 80 year old re purposed movie theater, and should provide a great setting of for a killer Wednesday night show. As the band grows in popularity, we should see them play more headlining shows in theatres/clubs instead of bars, so it should be interesting to see how it affects their sound. If all goes according to plan, this will be my fourth show of the tour, and possibly my last of the year, unless they announce some more east coast dates
